I. Overview & Standardization
The 9012 is a standardized North American (SAE/DOT) halogen bulb designed for use in specific reflector-type headlight assemblies. The PX22d base is its defining physical interface. This bulb is part of the 9000-series, which are commonly used in domestic US vehicles, trucks, and SUVs from the late 1990s through the 2010s. It represents an evolution in plug design for improved connectivity and vibration resistance.
II. Key Characteristics & Application
Single Filament Function: The 9012 is a single-filament bulb. It is typically used for low-beam headlight applications in vehicles with separate high and low beam units (a system often called "quad headlights").
Precise Beam Formation: Its filament is positioned to work specifically with the reflector of the headlight housing it was designed for, creating a sharp low-beam cutoff to prevent glare for oncoming traffic.
Optimized Power: It commonly operates at a standard 55W, balancing good light output with standard electrical system load.
III. Identification & Compatibility
Base: PX22d. This is a plug-in base with two opposing wire guides and a central locating tab. It is a keyed connector that only inserts one way.
Critical Non-Interchangeability: Despite potential visual similarity to other 9000-series bulbs, the 9012 is not electrically or physically interchangeable with others. Notably:
It is NOT interchangeable with the 9006 (also a low-beam bulb with a different base and connector).
It is NOT interchangeable with the 9011 (a high-beam bulb).
It is NOT interchangeable with the H11 (a different international standard, though sometimes confused).
Primary Use: Found in the low-beam socket of many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, GM, and Ford vehicles of a specific era. Always confirm using a vehicle lookup tool or the old bulb.
IV. Important Installation Notes
Orientation Matters: The PX22d base must be aligned correctly with the socket's keyway. Do not force it.
Handle with Care: Avoid touching the glass bulb with bare fingers, as skin oils can create hot spots and lead to premature bulb failure.
Verify Function: After installation, verify the low-beam pattern is correct and that the bulb is seated securely to prevent moisture ingress.
