I. Overview & System Evolution
The 9007 (PX29t) represents an evolution of the dual‑filament headlight standard, developed to succeed the older 9004 while maintaining compatibility with similar socket systems. It is a North American SAE/DOT standard bulb used in combined high/low beam (composite) headlight units of many late‑1990s to mid‑2000s vehicles, particularly from Chrysler, Ford, GM, and selected Japanese manufacturers. Its design incorporates refined filament positioning for improved beam focus and output distribution.

II. Key Characteristics & Optical Design

  1. Asymmetric Dual‑Filament System:
    — Low‑beam filament (typically 55W): Positioned and shielded to produce a sharp, asymmetric “step” cutoff (brighter on the right/passenger side for roadside signs, lower on the left/driver side to protect oncoming traffic).
    — High‑beam filament (typically 65W): Centered and optimized for maximum forward and peripheral reach when activated.

  2. Enhanced Light Output & Efficiency: Compared to the 9004, the 9007 often delivers higher lumens per watt and a more precisely controlled beam pattern, thanks to advanced filament geometry and gas‑fill technology.

  3. Single‑Bulb Dual‑Function Economy: Enables both beam functions in one headlight housing, saving space and cost while meeting updated regulatory requirements.

III. Identification & Critical Compatibility

  • Base: PX29t. This is a three‑tab plastic bayonet base with asymmetrical tab sizes for foolproof installation. The “PX” prefix and tab shape distinguish it from the older 9004 (P29t) base—though visually similar, they are not always interchangeable due to differences in tab spacing and electrical contacts.

  • Electrical Contacts: The base has three terminals (low‑beam power, high‑beam power, common ground). The wiring harness connector is specifically keyed for the 9007.

  • Compatibility Warning:
    — Not interchangeable with 9004 without verifying socket and wiring compatibility (though some aftermarket listings suggest “9004/9007” cross‑compatibility, this is vehicle‑specific and often not recommended for optimal performance).
    — Not interchangeable with H4 (P43t metal base) or any single‑filament bulb.
    — Not interchangeable with 9005/9006 system bulbs.

  • Primary Application: Found in composite headlights of trucks, SUVs, and sedans from brands like Jeep, Dodge, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Silverado, and certain Nissan/Infiniti models of the era.

IV. Installation & Handling Notes

  • Correct Alignment is Mandatory: The three‑tab base must be aligned precisely with the socket’s keyways. Forcing it can break tabs or misalign the filaments, ruining beam pattern and safety.

  • No‑Touch Rule Applies: Handle only by the plastic base. Skin oils on the glass will create hot spots and cause premature failure.

  • Beam Aiming Check: After replacement, verify the headlight aim—especially the low‑beam cutoff height and asymmetry—to ensure compliance and safety.

  • System Verification: Confirm the vehicle’s original bulb is indeed a 9007 by checking part numbers or base markings; do not rely solely on “it fits the socket.”
