Halogen Bulb 12V HS5 with P23t Base

This is a specialized halogen bulb primarily used for turn signal lights (indicators, blinkers) on motorcycles. Its design focuses on delivering bright, reliable flashing signals and meeting the specific electrical and mechanical requirements of motorcycles.

Key Features and Specifications:

  1. Model & Specifications:

    • HS5: This is the bulb's "optical/functional type." It explicitly identifies this as a single-filament halogen bulb designed for signal lights, especially turn signals. It is engineered to provide conspicuous amber or white light, with wattage and efficacy characteristics distinct from lighting bulbs like the H-series or HS1.

    • 12V: Rated operating voltage, compatible with most motorcycle electrical systems.

    • Wattage: Typically 21W. This is the standard wattage for motorcycle turn signals, balancing sufficient brightness for warning signals with compatibility for the flasher relay to produce a steady flash rate.

    • P23t: This is the crucial base/bayonet type. It is a dual-contact, prefocused metal bayonet base with offset locating pins. The "P" stands for prefocused (precise filament positioning), "23" is the model code, and the "t" often indicates two contacts (a center positive tip and the outer negative shell). Its asymmetrical pin design ensures the bulb can only be installed in one correct orientation, guaranteeing the signal is aimed properly.

  2. Application:

    • Primary UseFront and rear turn signal lights on motorcycles and scooters.

    • Secondary Use: Sometimes used for hazard warning lights or position/parking lights on certain models if specifications match, but its primary and most common use is for turn signals.

  3. Advantages:

    • Signal-Optimized: Color and brightness are optimized for warning signals, making them highly conspicuous.

    • Vibration Resistant & Reliable: The P23t base provides a secure connection resistant to motorcycle vibrations. Halogen technology is more robust than standard incandescent bulbs.

    • Plug-and-Play: As an industry-standard type, it is a direct replacement for failed original bulbs.

  4. Important Notes:

    • Color: Turn signal bulbs often have an amber (yellow) glass shell to produce the legally required yellow light. Confirm the color when purchasing. Clear glass versions exist but must be installed behind a yellow lens.

    • Wattage MatchNever replace it with a higher-wattage bulb (e.g., above 30W), as this may cause abnormal flasher operation, circuit overheating, or damage.

    • LED Upgrade: If upgrading to an LED turn signal bulb with a P23t base, its very low power draw (typically 3-5W) will cause the original thermal flasher relay to think the bulb is "blown," resulting in hyper-flashing or no flashing. You must replace the flasher relay with an electronic LED-compatible one or install load resistors for the LED bulbs.
